Heya everybody. Was reading random shit on the interweb and one article in particular got me thinking. It was about Valentine's day. So, seeing as that day itself is only two weeks away, I decided to say something about it.
It sucks.
... Surprised I said that? Yeah, coming from me, the guy who has had the word 'love' in every damn one of his MSN nicks. What the hell is this guy's problem? Angst? Girlfriend issues? Becoming Emo? Turning gay?
Nope, the problem ain't with me, the problem is with the damn holiday.
First off, we don't even get a day off school or whatever on Feb 14. Honestly its just like another day. Except for the massive amount of pink in all the card stores. The pinkness itself should outlaw it, but I digress...
So, what's my problem then? And yes, I do mean apart from the schizophrenia and multiple psychoses. My problem, quite simply, is that this so called 'day of love' is filled to the gut-busting brim with guilt.
Think about it. The people on this Earth come in two forms. Those who are getting some, and those who aren't getting any. For those who aren't, this 'holiday' just reminds them that they are single and that they suck. For those who are getting some, this day basically DEMANDS that they spend money, whether very little or enough for a yacht, on their significant other. It guilts them into doing so. Seriously.
Let's get down to it. Love is great, I'm all for a bit more love in this world, but the 14th of February just pisses me off. I don't need a designated day to fucking show my feelings. That's the whole point of love ain't it? I'll tell her I love her as and when I like. Which would be quite often, if the love was real. I don't need some warped 'holiday' to guilt me into doing it. That ain't love. That's peer pressure forcing it. If I love somebody, I won't need a day designated to do something special. The specialness will come when I'm free and when she's free and we both have some money. I don't need the guilt. And, since I'm single right now, I do NOT need a day to remind me that I am luckless around women. I think it speaks for itself.
Day for love eh? It sounds like a great concept, but then again, so is communism.
The problem is that it has been commercialised. Stores selling cards, people going out to restaurants to eat some wallet busting 'cuisine', movie theatres absolutely flooded. The fact remains that on that day, the economy gets a big spike, and that shouldn't be how it's done.
If the love were real, you'd pretty much be showing it 24/7, like Tom Cruise when he fell in love with Katie Holmes. Seriously, that dude was jumping on chairs on national TV. You don't need a special day to show it cuz, hell, everydamnday would be special.
And while we're speaking of commercialism, let's talk about Christmas.
Yes, Christmas. More guilt. Spreading the goodwill are we? Giving gifts from the heart eh? IF THEY WERE FROM THE HEART THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO BE SYNCHRONISED ON THE SAME DAY. Yeah, let's celebrate the birth of Jesus by whoring ourselves to the Consumerist Spirit. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if at the end of the Christmas shopping season all the cashiers take out the cash to count, stand in little circles and start singing: What a friend we have in Jesus... Yeah...
Speaking of songs, here's another. Tune of 'O come all ye faithful'
It's Christmas, it's Christmas
And look at what we're doing
We're buying and buying
Till it comes out of our ears
Registers ringing
Business folks are singing
Oh thank you God for Christmas
Oh thank you God for Christmas
Oh thank you God for Christmas, the profits are good!
Consumerism! Materialism! What the fucking hell?
Anyway, I'm through ranting. Hope you've had fun. And just to tell you, all I'm gonna do for Valentine's is to send a cheesy email.
Love is like pi: irrational, neverending and highly important.
